How Sunscreen and Sunblock Protect Your Skin.

Many people confuse sunscreen with sunblock, although they are two different types of UV protection.

  • Sunscreen is the most widely used sunblock. It blocks the sun's UV radiation. It blocks most but not all light. A chemical sunscreen.
  • Sunblock, on the other hand, bounces the sun's rays away from the skin, preventing penetration. It's a physical sunscreen.

Both sunscreen and sunblock offer great sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) doesn't recommend one over the other as long as it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation, has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or above, and is water-resistant. Just remember to apply it correctly.

Also, "suntan lotion" is no longer widely available, so avoid it if you see it. SPF less than 15 or oils that do not protect you from the sun.
